Quick guide: City Light Trails

Night time is an amazing time to grab your DSLR and your tripod and wonder around in the city. Follow these camera settings and tips to capture trails of night traffic or light of moving ferris wheels.

  • Exposure: Manual
  • Focus Mode: Manual
  • Shutter speed: 30 sec for slow moving subject and a little bit quicker for fast lanes
  • Aperture: f/8
  • ISO: 100 to keep noise at minimum
  • Focal length: depending on your proximity to passing vehicles
  • Drive mode: Single-shot
  • White Balance: Tungsten

Consider those additional tips: 

  • Look around you for a good standing and safe point where you can deploy your tripod 
  • Make use of a cable release, remote, or the self timer
  • In a brightly lit scene, start with a shutter speed of 1/15 sec and adjust accordingly
  • In post-processing, increase clarity and sharpness to your taste
